Which rechargable is better: Alkaline or NiMH?

Go NiMH. The capacity may still fall short of what is claimed for alkaline (Renewal) cells, but it's a far safer bet.

More Information

Go NiMH. The capacity may still fall short of what is claimed for alkaline (Renewal) cells, but it's a far safer bet. Alkaline rechargables still have a problem with swelling of the cathode. This can result in a stuck battery if it expands in your device. In the case of the Renewal, the battery construction is reversed to reduce the swelling, but this has an unfortunate side-effect of making the sides of the battery case continuous with the cathode, and not the anode as in most cells. This may cause a short-circuit condition in some devices such as mini-flashlights that use the battery case as the negative conductor.
