Universal PDA/Stowaway Combo case

Wed Apr 11, 2001 - 9:04 PM EDT - By Alan Graham

Holding the Stowaway

If you don't already have a Stowaway keyboard, you probably have some sad masochistic technophobia and enjoy writing long documents in Graffiti. Don't make me scold you, go get one. Then you will need something to carry it in. I have just the thing. Similar to the PDA section, this area is protected by the padded leather and the invisible plastic stitched into the lining. Unlike the PDA section, it is held into a "pouch" on all three sides by a zipper. The zipper teeth appear to be made of plastic, but the pull-tab is metal with a nice silver sheen. In order to keep the width of the case down, this section is not much bigger than the keyboard. I like this because it keeps the keyboard from shifting around (when zipped, it feels solid). It is a little tricky learning to get the keyboard in and out at a fast clip, but with a little practice it is second nature. The zipper can be difficult because of the tight fit, but I wouldn't want them to compromise the size or stability by making it any larger.

Once again, in the interest of science, I decided to do a safety test. This time, I felt that the bed test wouldn't be sufficient and I needed something more drastic. Oh, what I won't do for our readers?

Step 1: Enabled Backup module.

Step 2: Removed module.

Step 3: Put Visor and Stowaways in case.

Step 4: Deep breath.

Step 5: Close eyes, utter small prayer, drop case from 4' onto hardwood floor.

Results: All is working. The case took a slight angular turn and landed on the corner with a satisfying yet unsettling "smack" of the keyboard impacting the floor. Although the Visor could conceivably be harmed, the most important factor for me was that it didn't fall out. It is my scientific opinion that if you are looking for an indestructible case, this case isn't for you. However, it does a respectable job of protecting from the occasional klutz moment.
