Hope you have a Backup Module
I purchased the OmniSky package just before christmas with great expectations. Unfortunately, aside from the fact that it was not available at all in color, it liked to crash my Prism. Exiting the client, trying to do downloads, removing the module, anything that I did seemed to be impetus for that fatal exception. I had a near crisis when I got to my holiday destination without my backup module (so I thought) only to have the module crash, then not let me reset. Luckily I found my backup from the evening before I left, and i got to restore most of my data. Long story short, I had to adjust my habits and do a backup before using OmniSky every time. What a pain in the @$$.

Bulky and unstable
I was not thrilled that this device is so big but the real problem was that I had a very hard time making and keeping connections in Tucson where I live and Phoenix where I work. I returned it several days after I bought it.

Functional mobile IP connection
Omnisky service for the Novatel Minstrel S CDPD modem is one of the best solutions currently available. It's much better than nothing. You can always get something better later whenever it 3G CDMA services arrive. When I am on a business trip or on vaction, or anywhere away from home, it is real nice to grab e-mail from anywhere, get information, talk on Instant Messaging (with Visors, you can use the module and the keyboard at the same time, unlike with Palms), update AvantGo content, etc.

Poor coverage
I used the OmniSky modem for 3 weeks before I decided to return it. I was in love with the concept of accessing the NET from "anywhere". Unfortunately, the "anywhere" ended up to be my office and widely dispersed "anywheres". I live in the Palm Beach area and according to the coverage map I should have been able to get full coverage. This was not the case and the botton line was that I was not going to pay the high monthly fees for something that was only going to work part time. I don't think the infrastructure is ready for mass wireless use. Until then, I'll stick to the WAP surfing on my cell phone. It's much more reliable. My experience was not good but that does not mean that your experience will be the same. I just suggest that when you do try the OmniSky service, to drive around and take it on a tour of the areas that you frequently go to and check the coverage. If your experience is the same as mine, I suggest you take advantage of their return policy.

Great Product
Omnisky is my answer to getting to my work PC when I am on the road. I use the Palm VNC app (PC Anywhere) and it works great. Everyone has to remember that this product is only going to get better with time. And from the indications that I have, those times are going to be wirelessly fantastic...

Does need some work!
I used OmniSky on my new prism and 2 days and 6 hard resets I gave up. YadaYada offered me a free modem with 12 months of service, and it works much better. It also does not install all of the crappy software that omnisky. In addition it allows you to move files onto the 1mb of RAM onto the Modem itself. It has only crashed once in the 2 months that I have owned it. E-mail notification still sucks, but I will wait and see. The service area is scattered in the Twin Cities and could be better but when I have a good signal (ie downtown) it works great.

Needs Better Coverage
Couldnt get a connection of any kind in the Twin Cities, MN, but in the areas where a connection is made, the device is a major step forward.

good coverage and this thing sings. you can get better software (blazer for browser, AIM for instant messaging) to make up for the installed software's shortcomings. quite nice to check my email on the way to the subway everymorning and won a bid for kiss lunchbox on ebay while in the car.
